The Short Answer

For the most coverage in writing, buy the Steelcase Gesture new: its warranty names the structural parts covered for life. The Steelcase Series 1 is the lowest-priced chair here with 12 years of parts and labor and a 400 lb rating, at about a third of the Gesture’s Amazon price.

For less than a new Gesture, a remanufactured Leap V2 from Crandall Office comes with Crandall’s own 12-year warranty. On the Herman Miller Aeron, capacity depends on which of three sizes you order.

Warranty terms and capacities below come from manufacturer, reseller and Crandall terms, with no hands-on testing.

How to Read a Chair Warranty

A lifetime label can apply to part of the chair

The Gesture’s Limited Lifetime warranty is split by component: structure for life, moving and wear parts for 12 years, itemized in the Gesture pick below. Summaries for the Series 1, Series 2 and Amia carry the same Limited Lifetime name and state 12 years of parts and labor, with no separate structural term listed.

Parts and labor are separate promises

New Series 1, Series 2 and Amia chairs list both. Crandall’s remanufactured warranty lists parts only.

Use ratings overlap more than the wording suggests

Multi-shift 24/7 is the Series 1’s rating, and reseller listings give the Leap V2 a 24/7 rating. Herman Miller calls the Aeron’s warranty 3-shift, which describes the same round-the-clock use. Shift ratings for the Gesture, Amia and Series 2 are not listed.

Where you buy can decide whether you are covered

Herman Miller’s 12-year warranty holds only on chairs sold by Herman Miller or an authorized reseller, including authorized Amazon sellers. Branch voids its return and warranty policies on products shipped outside the continental US and Canada.

Crandall’s fine print: the 12-year remanufactured warranty covers parts, not labor, for the original owner in the US only, and does not transfer. A chair bought secondhand from its first owner has no Crandall coverage. Returns to Crandall are free.

Capacity labels differ between makers

Secretlab lists a 285 lb maximum load for the Regular Titan Evo on its specifications page and a separate 220 lb body-weight-support figure on its compare page. Both numbers describe one chair, so match the label before setting one maker’s figure against another’s.

The Picks

Most Coverage in Writing

Steelcase Gesture

Five parts of a new Gesture are warranted for life: the frame, seat shell, outer back, arm frame and base. The mechanism, cylinders, arm caps, foam and casters get 12 years. No other chair here has an itemized lifetime term listed, which makes the Gesture the one to pay for when written coverage is the deciding factor.

Buy it new to get that term. A remanufactured Gesture from Crandall runs roughly half the Amazon price, and whether Steelcase’s structural term follows a remanufactured chair is not listed.

  • ✓Lifetime coverage on named structural parts, bought new
  • ✓Remanufactured route at Crandall
  • ✗Mechanism, cylinders, arm caps, foam and casters stop at 12 years
Remanufactured at Half Price

Steelcase Leap V2

At Crandall, a remanufactured Leap V2 costs almost exactly half of a new one on Amazon. Bought remanufactured, it falls under the Crandall terms above.

Crandall’s coverage stays with the original owner, so the saving pays off for a buyer who plans to keep the chair.

  • ✓About half the new price at Crandall
  • ✗Parts-only coverage when remanufactured
Lowest Price With 12 Years Parts and Labor

Steelcase Series 1

Of the low-priced picks, the Series 1 has the fullest warranty summary: 12 years of parts and labor under Steelcase’s Limited Lifetime name, rated for multi-shift 24/7 use. It also carries BIFMA Level 3 certification. Most buyers who want a long warranty on a new chair can stop here.

A warranty means buying it new. Crandall does not remanufacture the Series 1 and lists it only used and as-is, with no new-parts restoration and no dealer warranty.

  • ✓Parts and labor for 12 years
  • ✓BIFMA Level 3 certified
  • ✗No remanufactured route with a warranty
Lowest-Cost Remanufactured Pick

Steelcase Amia

Among the remanufactured routes here, the Amia costs least: about half its new price at Crandall, and about a sixth more than a new Series 1. Against that Series 1, it trades parts-and-labor coverage for Crandall’s parts-only term, so pick it over the Leap V2 when the remanufactured budget is the limit, and over the Series 1 only if you prefer the Amia itself.

New, from Steelcase direct or Amazon, the Amia carries the Limited Lifetime warranty with 12 years of parts and labor.

Capacity by Size

Herman Miller Aeron

Capacity on the Aeron follows the size you order: A is rated to 300 lb, B to 350 lb and C to 400 lb. Order direct, in the size that covers your weight with room to spare. Configuring the chair at Herman Miller settles the size at purchase and keeps the 12-year, 3-shift warranty in force, since that warranty holds only through Herman Miller or an authorized reseller.

Crandall’s remanufactured Aeron Classic is the older, pre-2016 design and a different chair. Its capacity and specifications are not listed; the Crandall warranty applies to it.

  • ✓Three sizes, up to 400 lb in size C
  • ✗Coverage depends on the seller
  • ✗Sizes A and B carry lower ratings
Budget Contrast

Branch Ergonomic Chair

Seven years and 275 lb are the shortest warranty and lowest rating among the picks. The Series 1 costs about a third more and adds five years of coverage and 125 lb of rating. Choose the Branch only if you sit well inside its limit and the budget stops below the Series 1.

Branch repairs or replaces chairs under warranty at no cost, shipping included. Direct purchases come with a 30-day return window and a flat return shipping fee per chair deducted from the refund, and Branch direct is lower than the Amazon listing.

Recall note: In September 2026 Branch recalled about 16,000 Ergonomic Chairs made between September 10, 2025 and April 22, 2026, because the backrest can detach (CPSC recall 26-735). The manufacture date is on the label under the seat cushion, and owners of an affected chair get a free repair kit from Branch.
  • ✓Lowest price among the picks
  • ✓Warranty repairs include shipping
  • ✗Shortest warranty and lowest rating among the picks

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Steelcase Series 2 more durable than the Series 1?
The two match on warranty length, parts and labor, and the 400 lb rating. The Series 2 summary lists no shift rating, where the Series 1 is rated for multi-shift 24/7 use. The Series 1 vs Series 2 comparison covers the other differences.
Is there a Leap for sitters over 400 lb?
Steelcase makes the Leap Plus, rated to 500 lb, but it is a separate chair. The Leap V2 priced in this guide is the standard 400 lb model.
Some listings say the Amia holds 300 lb. Which figure is right?
Steelcase states 400 lb. The 300 lb figure comes from some third-party listings.
Does the Series 1 stool carry the same rating as the chair?
No. The stool variant is rated to 300 lb, against 400 lb for the chair.
Can I add a headrest to a Gesture later?
No. The Gesture headrest is factory-installed only, so decide on it when you order.
How does the Secretlab Titan Evo compare on warranty?
Its warranty is 3 years, extendable to 5 through Secretlab’s Extended Warranty Program, against at least 12 years on every new Steelcase pick here. The XL size raises body-weight support to 395 lb, from 220 lb on the Regular.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Series 1 new for the lowest price on 12 years of parts and labor, or a remanufactured Leap V2 from Crandall if you will keep the chair and parts-only coverage is enough. Pay up for a new Gesture when lifetime structural coverage is the term that matters most, and buy an Aeron direct in the size your weight calls for.
